Bangladesh Crisis: Amid escalating protests, Sheikh Hasina fled the country, accompanied by her sister, Sheikh Rehana Siddiq. Sheikh Rehana, the younger daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman—revered as the "Father of Bangladesh"—and his wife, Sheikh Fazilatun Necha Mujib, has been a steadfast supporter of her sister throughout pivotal moments in the nation’s history. Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, landed at Hindon Air Base near New Delhi in a C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft after fleeing the country following violent clashes.

Who Is Sheikh Rehana?

Sheikh Rehana was born on September 13, 1955, in Tungipara, Gopalganj, and her life has been closely linked to Bangladesh’s turbulent history. On August 15, 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of their family were tragically assassinated. At the time, Sheikh Rehana and her sister Sheikh Hasina were in Germany visiting Hasina’s husband, MA Wazed Miah, which saved them from the tragedy. Following the incident, the sisters sought political asylum in India, and later, Sheikh Rehana moved to London with her family.

While she has generally stayed out of the political limelight, Sheikh Rehana has been a strong supporter of the liberation war and the Awami League's cause. She has played a significant role in advocating for justice for her father’s assassination and influencing international opinion on the matter. Though not directly involved in politics, she remains a crucial supporter of Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League, particularly during times of crisis.

Sheikh Rehana is married to Professor Shafique Ahmed Siddiq, and the couple has three children. Their eldest daughter, Tulip Siddiq, is a prominent member of the British Parliament representing the Labour Party. Their son, Radwan Mujib Siddiq, is active in Dhaka with an international organisation and is involved with the Awami League’s research institute, CRI. Their youngest daughter, Azmina Siddiq, is a global risk analysis editor at Control Risks in London.
