An Indian-origin man was shot dead in Canada’s Burnaby, British Columbia, in what police believe was a targeted killing potentially linked to the ongoing gang conflict in the province. The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Dilraj Singh Gill, a Vancouver resident, who was fatally shot on January 22.
According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), officers from the Burnaby detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to reports of shots fired near the 3700 block of Canada Way just before 5:30 p.m. When police arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Gill’s identity was confirmed following the investigation.
Burned Vehicle Linked To Crime
Shortly after the shooting, police located a vehicle engulfed in flames in the 5000 block of Buxton Street. Investigators believe the vehicle was used in the crime, noting that setting fire to a getaway car is a tactic commonly associated with organised gang violence in British Columbia. Authorities have confirmed the burned vehicle is directly connected to the homicide.
In an official statement, IHIT said Gill was known to police and that the shooting “appears to have a nexus to the BC Gang conflict.” Investigators believe the killing was deliberate and targeted, though the motive remains under investigation.

Appeal For Witnesses And CCTV Footage
Homicide investigators are working closely with the Burnaby RCMP, the Lower Mainland District Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service to collect evidence and advance the probe.
Police have urged witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward. Investigators are seeking video recorded between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 pm local time on January 22 along Canada Way from Boundary Road to Willingdon Avenue, as well as Buxton Street near Royal Oak Avenue and Forglen Drive. Additional footage from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm local time in the area of Canada Way and Laurel Street, between Boundary Road and Gilmore Way, is also being sought.
