A recent Russian case in Vladivostok has revealed the life-threatening consequences of chronic alcoholism. Admitted to the ICU in a critical state, a woman whose name has not been released was discovered to be suffering from alcoholic polyneuropathy and alcoholic liver disease and kidney failure.
The woman had alcoholic polyneuropathy, a serious nervous disorder that results from chronic alcohol use. Alcoholic polyneuropathy destroys the peripheral nerves and causes loss of motor function. The disorder also causes impaired walking ability, numbness, and other neurological problems. At the time she was taken to the hospital, she could no longer walk and was severely impaired in her motor function.
Alcoholic Liver Disease And Enlarged Liver
During examination, physicians discovered that the patient's liver was unusually enlarged, indicating severe alcoholic liver disease. Chronic excessive alcohol consumption can initially result in fatty liver, advance to inflammation, and eventually result in cirrhosis. In the woman's situation, the hepatomegaly had progressed to the point where it caused complications throughout the body, involving other organs, especially the kidneys.

As a direct result of the liver damage, the female's kidney function had declined. The extreme enlargement of the liver put undue pressure on her body, causing kidney failure. Even with intense medical care, her organs were not able to recover from the accumulated damage of years of alcohol abuse.
Fatal Outcome
Medical staff struggled to stabilise her condition, but the synergy of alcoholic polyneuropathy, liver disease, and renal failure was lethal. A photo of her abnormally enlarged liver, posted to the Telegram channel Baza Bazon, showed the extent of damage. The liver had swollen to nearly double the volume of a normal human liver.
Alcoholic polyneuropathy and liver disease frequently occur in the course of years, with no symptoms until severe damage has been done. Experts caution that early intervention, moderation, and frequent medical check-ups are essential to avert such life-threatening consequences.
