Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Yemen's Aden; 38 Dead

Yemen Migrant Tragedy: As many as 38 migrants were killed after a boat they were travelling in capsized off the coast of Yemen's Aden, a local official and witnesses said on Monday (local time). As per the officials, the ill-fated vessel's journey originated in the Horn of Africa. Hadi Al-Khurma, the director of Rudum district, told news agency Reuters the boat sank before it reached the shores of the Shabwa governorate, east of Aden.

Yemen Migrant Boat Tragedy: What Local Officials Said

"Fishermen and residents managed to rescue 78 of the migrants, who reported that about 100 others who were with them on the same boat are missing. The search is still ongoing, and the United Nations has been informed of the incident," he said. According to the United Nations, 97,000 migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn of Africa last year.

Yemen Migrant Tragedy: Reminiscent Of 2023 Greece Boat Capsize

Though its scale is much smaller in comparison to that of the Messenia migrant boat tragedy in terms of casualties, the incident off Aden is reminiscent of the boat capsize that claimed the lives of at least 82 people off the coast of Greece last year. Around 500 people who became victims of the fatal boat capsize off the Greek coast have been presumed dead. The disaster involved a rusty fishing trawler named Adriana.
