Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has acknowledged his regret over a recent confrontation with US President Donald Trump at the White House, admitting that the exchange did not unfold as intended. Speaking on Tuesday, Zelenskyy expressed his hope to mend relations and ensure that future interactions remain constructive, emphasising the importance of continued cooperation and dialogue between the two leaders.

“Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to be. It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive," Zelesnkyy said in a post on X.

Ukraine's Commitment To Peace

During his remarks, Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s dedication to achieving peace. He stressed that no one desires an unending war and that his country is prepared to engage in negotiations to bring about a lasting resolution. “None of us wants an endless war. Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians,” he stated.

Proposal for Initial Steps Toward Peace

Zelenskyy outlined a series of immediate steps to de-escalate the ongoing conflict, proposing measures such as the release of prisoners and a truce in the sky, which would ban missiles, long-range drones, and bombs targeting energy and civilian infrastructure. He also suggested a truce in the sea, contingent upon reciprocal action from Russia. “We are ready to work fast to end the war, and the first stages could be the release of prisoners and a truce in the sky,” he added.

Appreciation for US Support

Acknowledging the support Ukraine has received from the United States, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for America’s role in maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence. He specifically referenced Trump’s past decision to supply Javelin missiles, a move that significantly bolstered Ukraine’s defense capabilities. “We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence,” Zelenskyy remarked.

Desire for Constructive Future Cooperation

Reflecting on the White House meeting, Zelenskyy admitted that the discussions did not go as planned, calling it “regrettable.” However, he expressed his willingness to make amends and work toward a more cooperative and productive relationship with the US. “It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive,” he stated.

Readiness to Sign Security and Minerals Agreement

Zelenskyy also underscored Ukraine’s readiness to finalise agreements related to security and minerals, expressing openness to signing them at any time and in any format. He described such agreements as steps toward greater security and solid guarantees for Ukraine’s future. “We see this agreement as a step toward greater security and solid security guarantees, and I truly hope it will work effectively,” he said.
