EV Charging Tips: With the rising popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) in India, knowing how to charge them correctly, especially during summer, is crucial. Unlike charging everyday devices like laptops or mobile phones, EVs require specific techniques to maintain battery health and efficiency. Electric vehicle batteries are highly sensitive to thermal energy and temperature changes. As India faces severe heat waves, the way you charge your EV can significantly impact its lifespan and driving range. Here are some important tips to follow for charging your EV during the hot summer months. By following these, you can ensure that your EV battery remains in good condition, providing you with a reliable and efficient driving experience.

Avoid Overcharging

Overcharging your EV is a common mistake that should be avoided. Although most EVs have an onboard battery management system that stops charging at full capacity, leaving them plugged in for too long can negatively affect battery health.

Steer Clear of Direct Sunlight

EV batteries, particularly lithium-ion ones, are sensitive to high temperatures. Charging your EV under direct sunlight can accelerate battery degradation, reducing its overall capacity and range. During hot summer days, it's best to charge your EV in a shaded area or garage to protect the battery from excessive heat.

Let the Battery Cool Down

After driving your EV, avoid charging it immediately. The battery pack heats up during use and also warms up while charging. To ensure proper heat management and minimise battery degradation, let the battery cool down for about 30 minutes before putting it on charge.

Don’t Charge Too Frequently

Frequent charging can be detrimental to battery health. While it’s tempting to keep your EV battery at 100 per cent charge, just like other smart devices, doing so can shorten its lifespan. Instead, charge your EV only when necessary to maintain optimal battery performance.
