Aadhaar Linking with Mobile Number: In a move aimed at ensuring seamless access to transport or driving licence-related services, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued an advisory requesting all driving licence holders and vehicle owners in India to add, update, or confirm their mobile numbers through the Aadhaar authentication process. The decision is expected to address a major problem of unpaid e-challans, some of whose databases may date back to the 60s and 70s, according to a media report.

MoRTH's Draft Rules on Pending Tolls

This does not end with e-challans; MoRTH's decision also covers pending toll payments. Per the ministry, those with unpaid user fees – defined as those not collected due to an invalid/missing FASTag or pending challan, irrespective of whether the vehicle's passage is being electronically recorded or not – shall not be allowed to deposit motor vehicle tax, issue a no-objection certificate (NOC) for renewal of registration, and transfer ownership, among other things. This is according to a draft notification issued last month by the Road Ministry, which sought to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to implement stricter rules around penalties.

'If the draft amendments take effect, timely mobile number updates could become critical for vehicle owners, not only to receive e-challan and toll notices but also to avoid disruptions in essential services like registration renewal, insurance issuance, and ownership transfer,' News18 reported while quoting a ministry official.

Step-by-Step Guide To Update Your Mobile Number Via Aadhaar

To add or confirm your mobile number through the Aadhaar authentication process, individuals need to visit the official Vahan and Sarathi portals.
