ABS Mandatory On New Bikes And Scooters: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) took a significant step toward enhancing the road safety of two-wheeler owners. The Ministry made it mandatory for all the upcoming two-wheelers to come equipped with ABS, regardless of their engine size.
The ministry has also made it mandatory for the dealerships to provide 2 helmets with a new two-wheeler vehicle: one for the rider and the other for the pillion. As per the government data, skidding due to braking and head injuries accounts for a large number of two-wheeler accidents. The decision regarding making ABS mandatory is expected to address these two major causes of road fatalities in the country.

While the move by the government is widely welcomed by advocates of road safety, it is also expected to be an important factor in the price hike of the entry-level bikes in India. India is the world’s largest two-wheeler market currently, and the 100-125cc entry-level bikes and scooters have the largest share in the market. This decision can directly impact the prices of the two-wheelers in the country, due to the addition of new hardware. The entry-level segment bike and scooter prices may go up by Rs 4,000- Rs 8,000, which can be attributed to this decision.
