AI In Cars: Indian cars have very much evolved over time, with manufacturers offering some premium and advanced features. Except for low-budget cars, any car available in India with a price tag of Rs 15 lakh is equipped with some of the best features including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Some foreign manufacturers, selling their cars in India, are also offering cars boasting Artificial Intelligence (AI). Amid the rise in the usage of AI in cars, the looming question is, how intelligent will cars become in the near future? To get an understanding of this, let us know how Artificial Intelligence (AI)operates in cars.
What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technology primarily focused on software within vehicles. It involves collecting, connecting and simulating data from all sensors attached to the car to make informed decisions. Essentially, AI detects patterns, utilises machine learning and deep learning in self-driving cars, and manages critical systems such as steering and brakes, transforming the driving experience.
Best Example of EV Artificial Intelligence
Electric vehicles are dubbed as computers on wheels, rooted in AI. Each component of the EV generates data based on its current state and the surrounding environment. This data is processed on the on-board microprocessor, which governs the mechanical parts. For instance, the crucial component of an EV—the battery pack. It incorporates a Battery Management System (BMS) that produces data regarding the status of each cell in the pack, voltage and current levels, recharge status, battery health, and the surrounding environment.

Maruti Investment in AI Technology
In 2022, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the country's largest car manufacturer, invested a total of Rs 2 crore in Sociograph Solutions Private Limited (SSPL), a startup specialising in Artificial Intelligence (AI). This investment is part of Maruti Suzuki's Mobility and Automobile Innovation Lab (MAIL) initiative, which provides support to startups with innovative mobility solutions. Notably, the MAIL program was launched in 2019.
