Indian automobile manufacturer Tata Motors has announced on Thursday that its upcoming electric cars will be built using Jaguar Land Rover's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform. Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM) and Jaguar Land Rover Plc (JLR), both owned entirely by Tata Motors, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to use JLR's platform for Tata's premium electric vehicles, specifically the Tata Avinya series. Additionally, Tata Motors revealed that the EMA platform from Jaguar Land Rover will also be utilized in development of the upcoming generation of Jaguar and Land Rover mid-sized electric SUVs that will be sold globally.
Anand Kulkarni, Chief Product Officer and Head HV Programmes, TPEM commented on this collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover, “Being built on an architecture that is equipped with the latest advances in new-age technology, software and artificial intelligence, Avinya will spawn a new breed of world-class EVs, with global standards in efficiency and range. We are delighted to collaborate on the EMA platform with JLR for actualizing this vision.”
The EMA platform from Jaguar Land Rover is expected to create more room and enhance comfort in the upcoming electric vehicles. It also includes advanced electrical and electronic architecture, connectivity features, software and the ability to update software over-the-air. Tata Motors has also revealed that the EMA platform will feature a highly integrated propulsion system including cell-to-pack battery technology, battery management and a charging system to ensure excellent vehicle efficiency and range. Furthermore, Tata Motors aims to enter the high-end electric vehicle market while also reducing the time and costs required in developing such vehicles by having access to Jaguar Land Rover's EMA platform.
