Chinese EV maker BYD has introduced a new hybrid powertrain that can provide a range of over 2,000 kilometres without needing a recharge or refuel. This development will increase competition with major automakers like Toyota and Volkswagen. The new technology will be available immediately in two sedan models priced under Rs 12 lakh. This marks a major milestone for BYD, which has been working on reducing fuel consumption since it first introduced hybrids in 2008.

BYD has shaken up the Chinese car market with aggressive price cuts, even though it has impacted their profits. They sold 3 million cars last year and nearly 1 million cars in the first four months of this year. In China, one out of every two hybrids sold is a BYD, highlighting its importance for the company's revenue and profit.

Car manufacturers worldwide are trying to reduce concerns about driving range and make more environmentally friendly vehicles. BYD reported that their new hybrid achieved a range of up to 2,500 kilometres in tests. For now, these upgrades are only for cars made in China, but they are expected to be exported soon.

BYD stopped producing fossil fuel-powered cars in early 2022 and has been increasing its hybrid exports to markets that lack battery charging infrastructure. The first two vehicles featuring this long-range capability are the Qin L and the Seal 06 sedans, both introduced at the Beijing Auto Show in April. They belong to BYD's Dynasty and Ocean series, respectively. BYD's new hybrid powertrain represents a significant step forward in the ongoing evolution of hybrid and electric vehicles, promising longer ranges.
