Citroen Basalt Crash Test Rating: The New Car Assessment Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean (Latin NCAP) has announced crash test results for the made-in-Brazil Citroen Basalt, with a zero-star safety rating for Citroen's coupe-SUV. The development comes days after Bharat NCAP awarded the C3 Aircross with a perfect 5-star rating – 5 stars in AOP (adult occupant protection) and 4 stars in COP (child occupant protection), putting the brand's safety record under scrutiny once again. For those unaware, the C3 Aircross underwent stricter Latin NCAP crash tests in late 2024 and scored zero stars.
Citroen Basalt Latin NCAP Crash Test: Details
The model tested was manufactured at the company's Brazil facility. On the safety front, the test model had 4 airbags and ESC as standard. Having said that, the model did not offer side head airbags and ADAS features, not even as optional equipment. The seatbelt reminder was only available for the driver.
Thanks to that, the Basalt scored 39.37 per cent in the adult occupant protection test, with 9.87/16 points in the frontal offset deformable barrier test and 8/8 points in the side movable deformable barrier test. While the side pole impact test was not performed due to the lack of side head protection in both rows, the SUV received 1.87/3 points in the whiplash rear impact test.

In the frontal crash test, the Basalt's structure was rated unstable due to an asymmetrical structural reinforcement placed in the lower sill close to the driver's side A-pillar. Additionally, the front passenger pretensioner failed to deploy, offering weak chest protection, according to Latin NCAP.
The child occupant protection test fared better, with the Basalt scoring 28.59 points (58 per cent). In the dynamic test, the SUV scored 19.88 out of 24. For the CRS (Child Restraint System) installation category, the Basalt scored 4.71 out of a maximum 12, while the model secured only 4 points out of 13 in the vehicle assessment test. ISOFIX mounts were available in the second row, but the vehicle lacked integrated CRS.
The Citroen Basalt achieved 53 per cent (25.62 points) in Pedestrian Protection and 35 per cent (15 points) in Safety Assist Box. Unfortunately, according to Latin NCAP, the Safety Assist Box and adult occupant protection failed to secure sufficient points to achieve more than zero stars. 'The Citroen Basalt is another example that, despite the model offering side protection body airbags, the full protection for the adult occupants is at the level of zero stars.'
