The Indian government introduced the FASTag system with the objective to streamline the process of paying at toll plazas and reduce waiting times at toll booths. FASTag, an electronic toll collection system, is now a common part of every car owner's travel experience. Undoubtedly, FASTag has made toll tax payments much more convenient and efficient for car owners in India. FASTag was first introduced in India in 2024 and later in 2019, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) made it mandatory for all car owners to get their FASTag account activated. Vehicles that do not have FASTags have to pay double the amount of the toll fee. As digitalisation has been rapidly increasing, obtaining a FASTag for toll tax payments has become a streamlined process.

Toll tax is automatically deducted from your FASTag account whenever you halt at a toll plaza. However, sometimes FASTag money is deducted from your account twice or by mistake when it is not supposed to be deducted. There is nothing to worry about though because that money can be refunded easily to your account. Follow these steps, to get a refund of the money deducted from your account unknowingly.

If money is deducted from your Fastag account by mistake, you can complain and get your money back. Normally, your money is refunded within 30 days after you complain. The complaint can be filed by calling at the official toll-free number of FASTag which is 1033.

If you do not get any response from the toll free number, another way to get your money refunded is to complain to the bank that has issued your FASTag. Some banks are linked with FASTag to help customers in resolving their issue. The toll free helpline number for these banks can be found on the National Payments Corporation of India (NCPI) website.
