Over the past 10 days, the Gurugram police have seized 19 vehicles, including auto rickshaws and motorcycles, due to non-payment of traffic fines. Each of these confiscated vehicles had collected fines totaling at least Rs 1 lakh, with over 100 pending e-challans each, indicating they were repeat offenders. The confiscated vehicles, which include 13 auto rickshaws and six motorcycles, are currently held at designated areas in Sector 29 and near Rajiv Chowk. One auto rickshaw had an shocking 289 unpaid challans, while others had 269 and 195, respectively. Among the motorcycles, one had 195 pending challans.

The e-challan system in Gurugram works through CCTV cameras that capture traffic violations. These violations are then verified and e-challans are issued accordingly. Common violations include wrong-side driving, unauthorised parking, signal jumping and riding without helmets. Fines for these offences range from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000, depending on the severity.

Unpaid fines can become a significant financial burden for vehicle owners as they keep accumulating over time. While there is currently no automatic system for recovering these fines, unpaid challans can prevent vehicle owners from selling their vehicles. A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the regional transport authority is required to sell a vehicle, which cannot be obtained if there are unpaid fines.
