South Korean manufacturer Hyundai has unveiled the performance oriented version of its popular EV model Hyundai Ioniq 5 which is being called the Ioniq 5 N. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N was revealed at the pre-show event of the AutoMobility LA that is scheduled to take place from November 17 to 26.

The 'N' in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N represents Hyundai's high-performance brand name. So far, the ‘N’ branding has typically been used for performance oriented Hyundai cars with traditional ICE engines. Previously, the i20, i30 and Elantra had their special N versions. However, for the first time, the all-electric Ioniq 5 has joined this exclusive group within Hyundai. The 'N' stands for two important things: the Namyang district in South Korea where Hyundai does its research and development and the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany where Hyundai puts its N cars to the test.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N - Performance

The Ioniq 5 N has been built using the standard Ioniq 5's Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) while combining it with N motorsport technologies to boost its performance. They've strengthened the motor and battery mounting and improved the front and rear subframes for better lateral rigidity. Both front and rear integrated drive axles (IDA) are also enhanced to handle more electric motor torque while cutting down on weight with 21-inch forged aluminium wheels. The steering system has also been strengthened for added strength. The vehicle includes a specially-tuned N R-MDPS (Rack-Mounted Motor-Driven Power Steering) system with a quicker steering ratio and improved torque feedback logic. They've also introduced the N Pedal, aiming for fast and thrilling cornering rather than just focusing on energy efficiency.

In addition to all these enhancements, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N comes with an upgraded electric propulsion system featuring improved battery cooling and N Brake Regen. It boasts a new 84 kWh battery pack, and Hyundai claims that the model is more resilient to power loss caused by excessive heat. There is also an exclusive N Race feature that lets the driver choose between 'Endurance' and 'Sprint' modes for additional control to drivers on track.

The Ioniq 5 N is also equipped with the N-tuned brakes, which is Hyundai's strongest braking system ever. It gets 15.75-inch front rotors with four-piston monobloc callipers and 14.2-inch rear rotors. These brakes are made with new lightweight material and have special airflow ducts for better cooling efficiency.
