Hyundai Grand i10 NCAP Rating: The Hyundai Grand i10 hatchback for the South African market has scored zero stars (0/34 points) for adult occupant protection (AOP) in a recently conducted Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash test. That said, the Hyundai hatchback has received three stars (28.57/49 points) for child occupant protection (COP). This makes sense for us as the model in question is manufactured in India and exported to the South African market, while the model sold in India had got two stars for both adult and child safety in the same Global NCAP crash test in 2020.

Hyundai Grand i10 for South Africa: AOP Results

In terms of safety equipment, the South Africa-spec Grand i10 tested by GNCAP had two frontal airbags (for the driver and the co-driver), but not even one for side body or head protection, according to the independent testing body. The hatchback also missed out on Electronic Stability Control (ESC), but was equipped with a seatbelt reminder (driver only), seatbelt pretensioners (for front-row occupants), and ISOFIX mounts on the outboard rear seats.

Due to this, the Grand i10 scored zero stars in the adult occupant protection, with its only points coming from the frontal offset deformable barrier test (8.259 points), wherein the protection offered to the driver's chest was 'weak'. Besides, the bodyshell and footwell were rated 'unstable', and the former was not capable of withstanding further loadings. Moreover, the hatchback was rated zero in the side movable deformable barrier category. Global NCAP skipped the side pole impact test as the vehicle did not offer side head protection as standard.

Hyundai Grand i10 for South Africa: COP Results

The child occupant protection test yielded a better result, with the Grand i10 scoring 24/24 in the dynamic test, 4.57/12 in the CRS installation category, and 0/13 in the vehicle assessment test. The rearward-facing child seats for both the 3-year-old and 18-month-old dummies, installed using the ISOFIX anchorages, was able to prevent head exposure during the frontal impact test, offering full protection. The CRS installation also showed full side impact protection for both the child dummies.

GNCAP also noted that the front passenger airbag of the Grand i10 cannot not disconnected in case a rearward-facing CRS is installed on the front passenger seat, which is why the vehicle had a 3-star safety rating for COP.
