Mahindra Scorpio-N has received an astonishing 0 star rating in the Australasian NCAP (ANCAP) because the Mahindra SUV received a 5 star rating in the Global NCAP tests. The primary reason as to why Mahindra’s best-selling SUV in the country has received a 0 star rating in ANCAP is the absence of ADAS features in the car. ANCAP gives 0 stars to vehicles that are not equipped with ADAS. As per ANCAP protocol, if a vehicle is not equipped with ADAS, it automatically receives a default safety rating of zero stars.

Responding to this result, Mahindra and Mahindra have now provided an official explanation and have specified their plan to enhance the safety of the Scorpio-N in future iterations. Mahindra is now expected to introduce ADAS in the upcoming facelift of the Scorpio-N SUV. Currently, Mahindra offers ADAS only in the XUV700 SUV. In response to the ANCAP safety rating, Mahindra and Mahindra released a statement saying, “The ANCAP has specific requirements, updated on January 1, 2023, mandating certain safety features. At Mahindra, we are dedicated to ensuring safety and are actively working to meet these distinctive safety regulations and requirements for Australia as part of our mid-cycle product update.”

Mahindra introduced the Scorpio-N SUV in Australia in April 2023, followed by its launch in New Zealand a few months later. Mahindra also sells other SUV models such as the Mahindra Thar in the Australian continent. ANCAP serves as the safety rating agency for all new cars introduced in both Australia and New Zealand.

The Mahindra Scorpio-N that was sent to ANCAP for testing was equipped with several safety features such as six airbags, Electronic Stability Control, ABS and EBD, and ISOFIX seats, among other safety features. However, despite these features, the SUV failed to secure any rating in the test. ANCAP attributed this result to the absence of integral safety features like autonomous emergency braking and a lane support system. These features are typically available in the ADAS pack, which Mahindra does not offer for this SUV. ANCAP also stated that the second and third rows of the SUV did not have seat belt reminders, speed limit information, a driver monitoring system, child presence detection, and insufficient protection for children in the second and third-row seats.
