Maruti Suzuki, the largest automotive manufacturer in India, has been directed by Malappuram District Consumer Commission in Kerala to refund the price of a car sold to a customer after its airbag failed to deploy during an accident three years ago. The order was issued following a complaint filed by Mohammed Musliar, a resident of Indianoor in the northern district.

According to the complaint, he was involved in an accident while travelling in the car on June 30, 2021. The vehicle sustained significant damage in the mishap, resulting in critical injuries to the man, as stated by an official statement. The consumer approached the redressal body, alleging that the manufacturer's fault led to the airbag's failure to deploy, resulting in his severe injuries. The Motor Vehicle Inspector also confirmed that the airbag did not activate during the crash.
Therefore, the Malappuram District Consumer Commission has directed Maruti Suzuki to issue a refund of Rs 4,35,854 which is equivalent to the price of the vehicle, along with an additional Rs 20,000 for litigation costs. The statement issued by the commission also stated that if Maruti Suzuki fails to comply with the order within one month, it will result in nine per cent interest being levied.

However, safety features and standards have been one of the most important considerations for both individuals intending to purchase a new car and authorities. Safety measures, such as crash tests, are other factors that influence an individual's decision to acquire a car. Speaking of Maruti Suzuki, several cars have undergone several NCAP crash tests. Maruti Suzuki Brezza SUV received a 4-star rating in the Global NCAP tests in 2018. However, models such as the Baleno, WagonR and Alto K10 have performed poorly as well as they have received low safety ratings in different NCAP crash tests.
