India EV Car Sales:  May 2026 became a new inflection point in the history of the Indian electric vehicle industry, as it recorded a new all-time monthly high by selling more than 26,000 electric cars. While Tata has remained the segment leader in May 2026 electric car sales, Maruti Suzuki, the largest car manufacturer in India, has cracked the top 5 EV makers’ list.

Maruti Suzuki Electric Car Sales

Maruti Suzuki currently offers a single model, the Maruti Suzuki E Vitara, in the country. The brand registered a surge in demand for the E Vitara, and the total sales stood at 4,365 units in May 2026. The brand began selling the E Vitara in the domestic market on February 17, 2026. It recorded sales of a total of 2,254 units in March 2026, and the sales dropped on a month-on-month basis in April 2026, as the brand recorded sales of a total of 2,006 units. However, the brand secured the fourth position in the electric car sales chart in May 2026.

Maruti Suzuki Overtakes Hyundai, BYD & VinFast

As mentioned earlier, the brand currently offers a single model, the Maruti Suzuki E Vitara, in the country. The brand has left behind car manufacturers such as Hyundai, BYD, and VinFast, which offer more models. While Hyundai offers models such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Hyundai Creta electric, BYD offers a total of 3 models, including the BYD Atto 3, BYD Seal, BYD eMax 7, and BYD Selion 7. The VinFast currently offers a total of 3 models: the VinFast VF6, VinFast VF7, and the VinFast VF MPV7 in the country.

Maruti Suzuki’s Upcoming Electric Car

Maruti Suzuki is also preparing to launch a new 7-seater electric car codenamed YMC in India. The prototype of the Maruti Suzuki YMC was recently spied for the first time, and it is expected to be launched by the end of this year in the country. The Maruti Suzuki YMC is expected to share its platform with the Maruti Suzuki E Vitara. The E Vitara uses a skateboard electric platform, and we can also expect it to feature the same battery options and powertrain as the E Vitara. However, we expect it to deliver less range than the E-Vitara due to its larger size. Notably, the E Vitara has a claimed range of up to 543 kilometres, and we can expect the Maruti YMC to have a claimed range of up to 470 kilometres.
