Maruti Suzuki Sales Milestone: Maruti Suzuki, India's largest automaker with a market share of around 40 per cent, has gone past the cumulative sales milestone of 3 crore units in the Indian market. Since beginning domestic sales with the iconic Maruti 800 in 1983, the country's largest carmaker has clocked more than 3 crore units, marking a first for any passenger vehicle maker in India. Of these cumulative sales, the bestselling Alto accounted for over 47 lakh units, followed by the Wagon R with more than 34 lakh units, and the Swift with over 32 lakh units.

Maruti Suzuki's First 1 Crore Sales Milestone: Driven By Iconic 800

Having surpassed the 2 crore-unit sales milestone in July 2019, Maruti Suzuki took 6 years and 4 months to reach its recent 1 crore-unit sales milestone. The sales of the first 1 crore units, which took about 28 years and 2 months, were largely driven by the Maruti 800, the company's first car.

Maruti 800: The People's Car

Launched in 1983, the Maruti 800 marked the beginning of the people's car era. It was not just a car; it came to represent dreams and aspirations for millions of Indians. And on account of its affordability and reliability, the Maruti 800 was a favourite among the middle class. Under the hood, the vehicle featured a 796cc three-cylinder petrol engine producing 39.5bhp. The first unit of the iconic car was handed over to Harpal Singh in December 1983 by Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India. 

Maruti Suzuki's Last 2 Crore Sales Milestone: Driven By Alto, Wagon R, Swift

Having said that, the production of the Maruti 800 was stopped in 2014 in favour of more modern vehicles. The period from February 2012 to July 2019 witnessed the remarkable popularity of the Alto 800/K10, Swift, Celerio, Wagon R, and Baleno. The last 1 crore unit sales took 6 years and 4 months, with the last few years representing the company's shift towards India's largest vehicle segment, SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles). The newest Maruti Suzuki SUV in India is the Victoris, which was launched in September 2025. Meanwhile, the brand is set to launch its first electric vehicle, the e-Vitara, in December.
