German luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has issued two separate recall orders in the United States. The recall has been issued for approximately 105,000 units of its GLE and GLS SUVs. These GLE and GLS SUVs have been produced between 2020 and 2023. The reasoning behind this recall aims to address potential issues with the transmission and brake pedal.

The first recall involves suspected transmission issues in specific GLE and GLS models equipped with a six-cylinder engine and a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Mercedes-Benz first became aware of this problem in March 2022 and identified it in May 2022. The fault is attributed to the transmission software, which may cause the engine to stall during downshifting when the transmission fluid temperature is low. If the software aborts the downshifting process while the 48v starter-alternator attempts to recuperate, the engine would stall.
While the issue may sound complex, it poses a significant safety risk, particularly on high-speed roads where the possibility of a rear-end collision is heightened. Mercedes acknowledges the seriousness of the problem but assures that in such instances, the engine can be restarted.

The second recall affects a smaller number of units and is related to a faulty pedal assembly in certain GLE models. Among the 105,000 SUVs being recalled, only 460 units are potentially affected by this issue. The problem is attributed to faulty welding by the supplier, which could lead to the accelerator and brake pedals breaking.
Mercedes-Benz will contact affected vehicle owners to arrange for repairs at no cost. In the case of the transmission software issue, new software will be installed, while technicians will perform specific welding repairs for the pedal assembly problem.
