The deadline for completing your Know Your Customer (KYC) verification for FASTags has passed, signaling changes in the usage of multiple FASTags for a single vehicle. As of April 1, vehicle owners with more than one FASTag will find their older tags deactivated, in line with the 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' initiative introduced by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). This initiative aims to streamline toll collection processes and eliminate the need for multiple electronic toll documents per vehicle.

The deadline for FASTag KYC verification was extended to March 31 from February 29 due to issues faced by Paytm, a digital payments platform, which was advised by the RBI to halt new customer onboarding temporarily. An NHAI official clarified that multiple FASTags for a single vehicle would no longer be functional, effective April 1. This move underscores NHAI's commitment to enforcing the 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' policy to facilitate smoother toll transactions and prevent delays at toll plazas.

FASTag, managed by NHAI, operates on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, enabling seamless toll payments directly from the linked prepaid or savings account. With a remarkable penetration rate of approximately 98 per cent and a user base exceeding eight crore, FASTag has significantly transformed electronic toll collection nationwide. The credit card-sized FASTag, typically attached to a vehicle's windscreen, facilitates non-stop traffic movement at toll plazas, eliminating the need for vehicles to queue for toll payments. The introduction of FASTag KYC verification aims to enhance the efficiency of the electronic toll collection system, ensuring seamless traffic flow at toll plazas. NHAI initiated this step after discovering instances of multiple FASTags issued for a single vehicle and non-compliance with RBI's mandate requiring KYC verification for FASTag issuance.
