How To Drive In Fog:  A thick-layer of fog has surrounded the northern regions of the country, often resulting in low visibility conditions. The thick-layer of fog makes it almost impossible to drive safely in winter. Several cases of fatal crashes and accidents are being reported across many regions in the country. But with the right tips and patience, one can easily deal with the low visibility conditions. Here we are sharing 5 tips to help you drive safely in fog.

Tip No 1: Clean Windshield & Windows

The lack of visibility on the road makes it difficult to drive safely. If your front and rear windshields or mirrors (ORVMs/IRVMs) are dirty, clean them before taking your vehicle on the road. Use the defogger mode to avoid fog forming on your windshield and mirrors.

Tip No 2: Avoid Overtaking

It is one of the most basic and significant things you can do while driving in low-visibility conditions. Overtaking in low-visibility conditions can confuse other drivers and result in an accident or collision. Therefore, do not attempt overtaking, and keep driving by sticking to the lane markers of your lane.

Tip No 3: No Need To Speed

You must have read that popular sign on the highways which reads, ‘Speed Thrills But Kills’. Speeding in any condition is not advisable as it increases the risk of a collision on the road. The thick layer of fog on the road makes the situation unpredictable, and therefore, speeding in poor visibility conditions is not a smart choice.

Tip No 4: Use Indicators At 10 Seconds Interval

The use of Indicators is highly advisable in any condition, as it reduces the chance of a collision. If driving in a low-visibility condition, you should use your indicators at 10-second intervals. Which essentially means that you have to turn on the indicator at least 10 seconds before you take any turn or switch lanes. Using indicators this way reduces the risk of collision further by alerting other drivers.

Tip No 5: Keep The Headlights On Low Beam

Yes, you read that right. Many people set the headlights on high beam as soon as they face a thick layer of fog/smog. People think that the visibility will increase if they set their headlights to the high beam mode. However, the rays of the headlight reflect back, making it more challenging for the driver to focus on the road. Therefore, keep your headlights on the low beam, and if your vehicle has fog lamps, turn them on.
