French automaker Renault currently retails the Austral SUV in Europe. Renault Austral is a five-seat petrol-hybrid SUV that was launched in 2022. The Austral SUV has now been seen on Indian roads for the first time and without any camouflage. It is similar in size to the Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV700, and MG Hector. Talking about the design of the spotted prototype of the Austral SUV, it features wraparound LED tail lamps extending to the center of the rear, with Renault’s new logo placed above the 'Austral' badge. Though not visible in the spy shots, the SUV also includes LED headlamps with DRLs, similar to those on the Mahindra XUV700, a large grille with silver accents and a sporty front bumper. In terms of powertrain, the Renault Austral SUV is powered by a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a total output of 200 bhp.

Will Renault Austral Launch In India?

While Renault has not confirmed the Austral’s launch in India, the vehicle is likely being tested to evaluate its hybrid system in local conditions for future models. Renault is considering hybrid powertrains for the upcoming Duster that is soon to be launched in the Indian market. The Austral is built on the larger CMF-C/D platform, while the new Duster will use the smaller CMF-B platform. This smaller platform will also support a new midsize SUV from Nissan based on the Duster, with plans for seven-seater versions of both models to follow.
