In a significant move to modernise the toll collection system on Indian highways, Road, Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced the upcoming transition from FASTags to satellite-based electronic toll collection systems. This shift aims to replace traditional toll plazas across the country with a more efficient, satellite-based system. Minister Gadkari emphasised, “The government is exploring new technologies, including GPS-based toll systems to replace toll plazas in the country... we will start a new GPS satellite-based toll collection across the country.”

How Is Satellite-Based Toll Collection System Different From FASTag?
Currently, FASTags utilise Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for automatic toll deduction. People attach these reloadable tags to their vehicle windshields and link them to a bank account or prepaid wallet for easy toll payments. As vehicles reach toll booths, FASTag scanners detect the tags and automatically deduct the toll amount, allowing drivers to pass through without significant delays.
In contrast, the new satellite-based toll collection system will continuously track vehicle movements via GPS. Toll charges will be automatically calculated and deducted based on the distance travelled on tolled roads, eliminating the need for toll plazas altogether. This system may involve the use of GPS-enabled FASTags, integrating existing infrastructure with advanced tracking technology.

Advantages of Satellite-Based Toll Collection
Elimination of Toll Plazas: Vehicles will no longer need to stop at toll booths, reducing traffic congestion and improving travel times on highways.
Enhanced Traffic Flow: The removal of toll plazas will lead to smoother traffic flow, minimising jams and delays.
Increased Security: Continuous GPS tracking will enhance vehicle security, making it easier to locate stolen vehicles.
Challenges of Satellite-Based Toll Collection
Cybersecurity Concerns: Direct deduction of toll amounts from users' savings accounts could increase the risk of cybercrimes.
Cost Uncertainty: Unlike FASTag, which offers free usage within a 5km radius of toll plazas, the charges for GPS-based toll collection are yet to be determined.
