Tata Motors aims to achieve a 5-star safety rating from the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) for its upcoming Tiago and Tigor models. Mohan Savarkar, Chief Product Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles emphasises that BNCAP is a crucial safety benchmark and stresses the importance of offering six airbags for this rating. While Tata's latest SUVs already come with six airbags as standard, there is a plan to revamp entry-level models like the Tiago and Tigor as well. They will be incorporated with enhanced safety features, including six airbags as standard.

Previously, discussions revolving around mandating six airbags in all new vehicles to be able to send them for testing under the BNCAP were also considered. However, later the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways decided that this should be a voluntary approach by the manufacturers but will be necessary if they want to receive a 5-star safety rating under the programme. This is part of the reason why several manufacturers are standardising six airbags across their entire lineup. Beyond passive safety measures, Tata Motors is increasingly focusing on active safety systems to prevent accidents altogether. Savarkar emphasises the importance of Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as a foundational step towards Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA).
