Tesla First Car Showroom In India: US based EV manufacturer Tesla is gearing up to enter the Indian market and launch its sales in India later this year. Therefore, Tesla is looking into potential showroom locations in New Delhi and Mumbai. According to a report by Reuters, this move comes right after Tesla has experienced a drop in global vehicle deliveries in the first quarter, marking its first decline in nearly four years. With the production of right-hand drive cars already underway at its plant in Germany for export to India, Tesla is gearing up to tap into India's growing electric vehicle market.

The Indian government recently reduced import taxes for electric vehicles to 15 per cent, down from as high as 100 per cent, for automakers committing to investing at least $500 million and setting up manufacturing facilities in the country. Tesla's CEO Elon Musk is expected to announce significant investments during his upcoming visit to India, where he is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Tesla executives have been searching for suitable showroom locations since last month, discussing potential high street and mall sites with real estate developers. They aim to start construction soon to ensure the showrooms are ready in 2024.

While the electric vehicle market in India is still small, accounting for just 2 per cent of total car sales in 2023, the government has ambitious goals, aiming for 30 per cent of new car sales to be electric by 2030. This presents a significant growth opportunity for Tesla in India. However, Tesla faces challenges in its primary markets of the United States and China, with slower growth rates. Additionally, the company has reportedly put on hold plans for a budget-friendly car that was expected to drive mass-market growth.
