What Is Intelligent Speed Assistance System And How Will It Help Indian Authorities To Combat Over-Speeding

Speeding is a major problem in India as it leads to several accidents across the country. Most cars are now equipped with visual and audible warning systems for speeds over 80 km/h and continuous beeping at over 120 km/h. The introduction of an over-speeding device could be the next step in promoting safer driving practices.

What Is An Intelligent Speed Assistance System? 

An over-speeding device known as an Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) system, uses a video camera and GPS-linked speed-limit data to monitor and enforce speed limits on different roads. Unlike current systems that only warn at specific speeds, ISA continuously adjusts to different speed limits on different road sections and alerts drivers accordingly.

From July onwards, ISA will become mandatory in all new cars sold in the European Union. In the United States, a survey by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that about 60 per cent of drivers support the inclusion of ISA in their vehicles.

Will Intelligent Speed Assistance Be Successful In India? 

Talking about India, the country has made significant strides in road safety. Specially, in terms of improved infrastructure and following safety protocols in car manufacturing and the introduction of Bharat NCAP for crash ratings. However, improving driver awareness remains a crucial area. ISA could assist drivers in better following local rules and regulations, especially in a country as diverse as India, where speed limits vary widely. The system’s ability to scan and adapt to different speed limits could be highly beneficial. On the downside, making ISA mandatory could increase vehicle costs, potentially affecting sales. Experts believe that while ISA may not be a complete solution to the problem of speeding, it could be a valuable tool in the ongoing effort to make roads and cars safer.
