The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave its nod to the 'PM-eBus Sewa' scheme earlier this week. The 'PM-e'Bus Sewa' programme would offer 10,000 electric buses to 169 cities through a public-private partnership with the aim to boost e-mobility.

The anticipated cost of the programme is Rs 57,613 crore, of which the central government would contribute Rs 20,000 crore and the remaining amount will be covered by the states. For 10 years, the PM-eBus Sewa will provide support for bus operations.

Under this scheme, Green Urban Mobility Initiatives (GUMI) will be taken in 181. The green initiatives would include bus priority, infrastructure, and multimodal interchange facilities. The scheme would also aim to achieve NCMC-based Automated Fare Collection Systems, and charging infrastructure, among others, according to the government’s press release.

Driving Change In Urban Mobility

According to the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV), the PM-eBus Sewa will serve as a catalyst for the promotion of electric cars throughout metropolitan centres to increase the adoption of electric transportation. Buses are a major contributor to urban pollution, therefore the move will significantly lower pollution levels and associated carbon emissions. Two-wheeler transportation is popular and can make a substantial contribution to India's EV agenda.

Combatting Urban Pollution

This move is positioned to serve as a catalyst for the promotion of electric vehicles across various urban centres, enabling a more extensive embrace of electric mobility. The programme has the potential to provide direct employment opportunities and assist in upskilling current resources. It will also introduce economies of scale for the purchase of electric buses.
