Not just Bollywood, Mumbai, the city of dreams, is known for many iconic things. Among them were the double-decker buses which were known as the lifeline for the commuters of the financial capital of the country. The red double-decker buses were a part of the city's public transportation system for many years. Taking inspiration from London's double-decker buses, Mumbai's diesel-powered non-AC double-decker buses were originally introduced in 1937.
At their peak in the 90s, nearly 900 of these buses traversed the city's roads. They offer a unique way to explore the city's bustling streets and enjoy panoramic views from the upper deck. However, by 2022, their numbers diminished down to just 48. Last week on September 15, the bus services were discontinued forever, with the last double-decker bus completing its final route.
Why the iconic buses were discontinued?
As per the regulations of the Regional Transport Office (RTO), buses must be discontinued after being in operation for 15 years. Thus, the last non-AC double-decker bus, after completing 15 years of service, was finally discontinued on September 15. Hundreds of commuters took rides in the bus one last time to cherish the last experience in the iconic double-decker buses, which served office-goers, students, senior citizens and residents, among others, over the years.

New Electric Double-Decker Buses
BEST (Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking) has reassured people that double-decker bus services will continue but with a modern and environmentally friendly change. The traditional diesel-powered double-deckers are being phased out and replaced with electric, air-conditioned double-decker buses. This transition began in February, with approximately 25 electric buses already introduced in the city. Currently, there are 16 AC double-decker buses in operation and more will be added. Additionally, 20 open double-decker buses, primarily used for Mumbai Darshan tours, will also be acquired.
