Bihar News:  Ahead of Legislative Assembly Elections in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday announced a major hike in the honorarium of support staff in state-run schools, including cooks, night watchmen and physical education and health instructors. This announcement comes after Nitish Kumar announced an increase in the honorarium of ASHA and Mamta workers earlier this week.

In an official announcement on X (formerly Twitter), CM Nitish Kumar said that the decision is a part of the state’s continued efforts to strengthen the education system since the formation of his government in 2005.

According to the revised structure, the honorarium of the cook working under the mid-day meal program in the Education Department has been doubled from Rs 1,650 to Rs 3,300. The honorarium of night watchmen deployed at secondary and higher secondary schools has been increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000. Meanwhile, physical education and health workers will now receive Rs 16,000, doubling from Rs 8,000 earlier.

In a bid to boost their morale, the Nitish-led government also announced an increase in the annual increment of the support staff. Their annual increment has been raised from Rs 200 to Rs 400. “Cooks, night watchmen, and physical education and health instructors have played an important role in strengthening the education system. Keeping this in mind, we have decided to double their honorarium, making a respectable increase in their remuneration,” Kumar said.

In addition, the Bihar CM also announced an increase in the total education budget in Bihar. “In the year 2005, the total education budget was 4,366 crore rupees, which has now increased to 77,690 crore rupees,” he added.

This announcement comes right after the Bihar CM announced a major increase in the honorarium of ASHA and Mamta workers in recognition of their contribution to improving rural health services. The honorarium of ASHA workers was increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000, while the honorarium of Mamta workers was increased to Rs 600 from Rs 300.

As the Bihar Assembly Elections are approaching, Nitish Kumar has made several significant announcements, including free electricity up to 125 units, jobs for one crore youth in the next five years and a hike in the monthly pension of journalists to Rs 15,000.
