A notorious criminal, wanted in over a dozen serious cases including murder and extortion, was injured and arrested following a gunfight with the police in the Khagaul area late Friday night. The accused, identified as Manager Rai, a resident of Didarganj, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during the exchange of fire near Lakh Par.

The Trap And Exchange Of Fire

The encounter reportedly took place around 3:00 am. Acting on a confidential tip-off regarding Rai's presence in the area, a police team swiftly mobilised and cordoned off the location near Lakh Par. Upon finding himself surrounded, the accused opened fire on the police team in an attempt to escape. In the ensuing retaliatory fire, Rai was shot in the leg and subsequently apprehended. He was immediately rushed to AIIMS for treatment.

Police recovered a country-made pistol, two spent cartridges, and a scooter from the scene. While the shootout initially triggered panic among local residents, the situation was quickly brought under control due to the prompt police action.

Wanted In High-Profile Murder Case

According to police sources, Manager Rai had been absconding for a long time and was a significant target for law enforcement. He has a history of spreading terror in the region, with over a dozen criminal cases registered against him, including eight at the Khagaul police station alone. Notably, he is a key accused in the 2022 murder of Dr Mohd Anawar Alam in Khagaul.

Probe Underway

City Superintendent of Police (West) Bhanu Pratap Singh visited the crime scene to assess the situation and directed officers on the necessary legal proceedings. Officials stated that the interrogation of the accused is likely to lead to important revelations regarding his criminal network and involvement in other cases. Police patrols have been intensified in the area as the investigation continues.
