Bihar Assembly Election: The Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday announced a 10-point programme to empower the Extremely Backward Classes (EBC) ahead of the much-hyped Bihar assembly election. Gandhi emphasised that if elected to power, the INDIA-Bloc will break the barrier of 50 per cent reservation and will also increase the reservation to 30 per cent in panchayats and urban local bodies for the EBCs. He further slammed the current BJP-led NDA government for allegedly snatching the democratic rights of people. The INDIA-Bloc would contest to form a government in the state after almost a decade.

What Rahul Gandhi promised to the EBCs:

- While addressing a crowd during the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Rahul Gandhi promised that the 'Extremely Backward Classes Atrocities Prevention Act' will be implemented if the opposition alliance forms a government.

- While citing Article 15(5) of the constitution, the Congress leader promised reservation in all private educational institutions of the state.

- The Congress leader also announced that the reservation for EBCs will be increased to 30 per cent from the current 20 per cent in panchayats and urban local bodies.

- Rahul Gandhi also stated that the grand old party will surpass the 50 per cent limit on reservation.

- The Congress leader also emphasised that ‘Not Found Suitable’ (NFS) in the selection process for appointments will be declared illegal.

- A committee will be formed to resolve the issues related to under- or over-inclusion on the list of EBCs.

- The landless individuals from the backward classes will get residential lands in the urban areas or five decimals in the rural areas.

- The individuals of the backward classes will also get reservations in the government contracts worth up to Rs 25 crore.

- A regulatory authority will be established to ensure that all the promises are being implemented on the ground.
