Bihar Food Dept Deploys AI To Ensure Accurate Ration Distribution; e-PoS, Digital Scales Linked

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be used in Bihar to keep account of every single grain of food distributed to the poor under the Public Distribution System (PDS). This will not only prevent irregularities in food grain distribution but will also create a record for the Food and Consumer Protection Department of how much grain has been distributed correctly from the shops. 

For this, the department has implemented a process to connect e-PoS machines with digital weighing scales at all 55,111 PDS ration shops. The same system will also be implemented in 5,000 new ration shops. Instructions have been given to all District Magistrates and Sub-Divisional Officers to open the new shops.

According to a senior official from the Food and Consumer Protection Department, the integration of e-PoS and weighing machines in all PDS ration shops is a much-awaited reform that will eliminate manual errors. Beneficiaries will be identified in real-time, and it will be ensured that they receive the correct quantity of rations. This will bring more transparency to ration distribution and will curb complaints ranging from grain leakage to other issues. 

The AI-based new system will be implemented effectively so that no eligible beneficiary is deprived of rations due to technical reasons or operational glitches. Under the "One Nation, One Ration Card" scheme, all eligible beneficiaries should receive their rations without any delay. Strict action will be taken against Fair Price Shop operators who refuse to provide rations to eligible beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act. 

Additionally, information about the eligibility for this scheme will be clearly displayed on a board at each shop, so that migrant beneficiaries do not face any problems. 

With the new system, this integration of e-PoS and weighing machines will help record weight data in real-time during each transaction. This will ensure the distribution of the correct quantity of rations, prevent manipulation of ration stock, and curb irregularities in the system.

After the e-PoS machines are connected to the digital weighing scales, real-time data from across the state will reach the Food and Consumer Protection Department. Along with this data, the remaining food grain data will also be uploaded to the server. With the help of AI, this data will be analysed, and wherever less than the prescribed quantity of grain is given, related information will be automatically generated in the Control and Command Centre. 

There is a common complaint that the consumer's fingerprints are not being read by the PoS machines or that the lines on their hands have faded. In view of such complaints, a solution for this has now been found. In such a situation, rations will be given after establishing identity through iris scans and face recognition. Arrangements for this are being made in all ration shops.
