Women from Bihar are now confidently driving abroad, thanks to an initiative by the Nitish Kumar government. Over the past three years, 73 women have obtained an International Driving Permit (IDP) from the District Transport Office (DTO) in Patna, alongside 602 men availing the same facility.

The Bihar government has made IDPs available at DTO offices across all 38 districts, allowing residents to obtain the permit from their own city without hassle. The IDP enables holders to drive two- and four-wheeled vehicles in 160 countries for up to six months.

This initiative has been particularly beneficial for residents travelling to countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the USA, the UK, Russia, Ukraine, Mauritius, and Fiji for work or study. The number of people travelling abroad has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic, and this facility provides direct relief to expatriates from Bihar.

While the figure of 73 women obtaining an IDP may appear modest, its social and symbolic significance is substantial. It reflects that women from Bihar are stepping beyond traditional roles in education and employment to participate actively in global mobility.
