As a relief to thousands of senior citizens, the Social Welfare Department of Bihar will organise special camps to restore old-age pensions that were stopped midway due to technical issues.

According to the department, around three lakh elderly beneficiaries have faced disruptions in pension payments, often due to verification problems such as worn-out fingerprints, eye-related issues, or mismatches in personal details. A common reason has been spelling errors — where names in Aadhaar cards differ from those in bank accounts — preventing Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) transactions.

Acting on the instructions of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, block-level camps will now be set up to address these problems and restart the pension process.

The move comes after the state government increased the monthly pension under the Mukhyamantri Vridhajan Pension Yojana from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100, leading to a surge in applications. The scheme’s beneficiaries have risen from 50 lakh to 50,63,557.
