The Bihar government’s efforts to improve rural infrastructure have made significant progress under the Bihar Rural Road Maintenance Policy 2018. The Rural Works Department has so far completed maintenance work on more than 36,372 kilometres of rural roads across the state. Administrative approval was granted for the repair and upkeep of a total of 40,250 kilometres, involving 16,166 rural roads.
According to officials, initial repair work on 15,342 roads, covering over 36,855 kilometres, has already been completed. The government has allocated over Rs 18,963 crore for this initiative, reflecting its strong commitment to rural connectivity.
East Champaran has led the state in rural road maintenance, with over 2,363 km of roads repaired. It is followed by West Champaran (1,979 km), Muzaffarpur (1,626 km), Saran (1,560 km), Samastipur (1,389 km), Rohtas (1,358 km), Gaya (1,358 km), Vaishali (1,346 km), Patna (1,327 km), and Madhubani (1,223 km).
Rural Works Department Minister Ashok Chaudhary said the policy has laid a strong foundation for rural development. “This initiative is not just a scheme; it is a vehicle for empowering rural Bihar and improving access and mobility,” he stated.
The policy, launched in 2018, aims to provide long-term sustainability to rural road infrastructure through structured repair and maintenance programs.
