Under the UDAN scheme, the Bihar government signed an MoU with the Airports Authority of India to develop six small airports in six districts of Bihar. The state government has planned to develop airports in Madhubani, Birpur (Supaul), Munger, Valmiki Nagar (West Champaran), Muzaffarpur and Saharsa. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar approved Rs 150 crore for the first phase of the project.
Bihar Director of Civil Aviation Nilesh Deore exchanged the MoU with the Airports Authority of India. The agreement was signed in the presence of the State’s Chief Secretary, Amrit Lal Meena and the Delhi-based Resident Commissioner of Bihar, Kundan Kumar, in Delhi on Monday.
The Chief Secretary said, “This agreement is a decisive initiative towards strengthening regional connectivity in Bihar. While this will strengthen the transport infrastructure in the state, it will also open new doors for investment and development.”
Bihar Cabinet Approves The Proposal
The state cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, approved the plan for the development of airports. In the meeting, the state government approved the initial funding of Rs 150 crore for the first phase of development. The small airports will operate 19-seater aircraft, which will improve air connectivity in remote areas of Bihar. Tourism, business and employment opportunities will increase in these areas of Bihar.

The initiative to develop small airports is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Udaan (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme. With the aim to connect regions through affordable air travel, the government plans to develop 50 more airports in the country in the next five years. More than 350 airports will be developed by 2047.
