In a significant development aimed at ensuring safe and seamless travel during rising Ganga water levels, a successful trial of the Main Pontoon (MP) Ganga Van was conducted at Nasriganj Ghat in Danapur. The watercraft service, which will facilitate the movement of passengers and vehicles between Danapur and Panapur Ghat in Saran, is expected to begin operations soon.
During the trial, officials from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), along with commuters and their vehicles, crossed the Ganga aboard the MP Ganga Van. Covering approximately 2.5 km in 40 minutes, the vessel returned in just 10 minutes. Capable of accommodating 250 passengers and 25 vehicles simultaneously, the special pontoon vehicle is expected to serve commuters, farmers, and small traders.

IWAI Director Arvind Kumar confirmed that the service will operate until September–October. A proposal has been sent to the state government to formalise the ferry’s operation during monsoon-induced high water levels. The district administration will oversee safety measures, while IWAI will provide manpower and fuel at no cost.
The pontoon used for the trial was brought from Mahuli Ghat in Ara. Similar services are planned at four other Ganga locations: Danapur’s Nasriganj Ghat, Bidupur Mahnar’s Chakosan Ghat, and two ghats in Kachchi Dargah. Plans include services at Kala Diara Ghat in Gyaspur (Fatuha) and Kalu Ghat in Saran once the new six-lane Kachchi Dargah bridge becomes operational.
Additionally, the move is expected to ease river traffic as pontoons currently delay cargo and passenger ships by up to two days. With this new system, ships will be able to pass within an hour of pontoon adjustment.
