The Bihar police department is moving toward complete digitisation of its processes, from research to investigation, aiming to modernise operations and improve efficiency. As part of this initiative, all police officers—particularly research and investigation personnel—are being provided with laptops and smartphones. Currently, over 40,000 officers at the police station level, along with other departmental officers, have been equipped with these devices.
A committee chaired by the IG Modernisation has been formed to implement daily file management and other processes through online platforms. The committee recently studied best practices in Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, where police operations are almost fully digitised.
Following the implementation of the BSS (Indian Judicial Code), it has become mandatory to record all police investigations, raids, site inspections, and other actions as digital evidence for court use.
To support this, the department has developed several mobile-based applications for tasks ranging from passport verification to criminal identification. Using the CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System) app, officers can identify criminals directly from their mobile devices and seamlessly share information across police stations.
Currently, approximately 900 out of over 1,300 police stations in the state are connected to the CCTNS network, with efforts underway to link the remaining stations rapidly. In these connected stations, criminal records and information about notorious individuals are maintained online, enhancing investigative efficiency and real-time coordination.
