Bihar Police will be honoured with 15 medals this Independence Day, including seven Gallantry Medals (Veerta Medal), two President's Medals for Distinguished Service, and six Police Medals for Meritorious Service, announced the Home Ministry.
Among the recipients, IPS officers DIG Nilesh Kumar and SP Sanjay Kumar Singh have been selected for the President's Medal for Distinguished Service. The Veerta Medals have been awarded to Babu Ram (DIG, former SP Aurangabad), Inspector Saket Saurabh, Inspector Ramraj Singh, Inspector Tarbabu Yadav, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sanjay Kumar Chaudhary, Surendra Paswan, and Vikas Kumar for acts of exceptional bravery.
The Police Medal for Meritorious Service will be presented to IPS officer and IG Garima Malik, AIG Smita Suman, DSP Rajesh Ranjan, Havildar Bimal Chhetri, Assistant Sub-Inspector Ashish Ranjan Singh, and Constable Sarvesh Kumar. Last year, the Bihar Police had received 23 medals on Independence Day. The Bihar Police Headquarters congratulated all the awardees.
Notably, six Gallantry Medals are being awarded for the heroic response during a deadly Naxalite attack in Aurangabad in 2016. During a joint combing operation led by then-SP Babu Ram with the Cobra Battalion, Naxalites detonated an IED at Dumri Nala’s Bagle foothills, resulting in the martyrdom of ten soldiers—eight on the spot and two en route to the hospital.
Despite this, the police retaliated bravely, killing three Naxalites and recovering a large cache of firearms and ammunition. The officers involved in this operation have been recognised for their courage and valour with the Gallantry Medal.
