Delhi-NCR Weather Update:  The national capital on Friday received morning showers, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a rain and thunderstorm alert across the city. The weather department issued a yellow alert for light rain at around 10 AM on Friday, but later upgraded it to an orange alert at 11:20 AM. This comes a day after the national capital crossed the monthly average and annual rainfall totals on August 14. Delhi and neighbouring NCR cities are expected to witness a wet weekend with one or two spells of heavy rain accompanied by thundershowers and generally cloudy skies.

Delhi-NCR Weather: Rain, Thunderstorms Likely Over Weekend

According to the latest by the weather department, Delhi is set to witness light rain with thunderstorms and cloudy skies throughout the weekend. Residents are advised to remain cautious as one or two spells of heavy rain may disrupt their outdoor plans and cause inconvenience.

The maximum temperature and minimum temperature are likely to hover around 33 and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively. Earlier in the day, the IMD issued a yellow alert for rain, but later upgraded it to an orange alert following a spell of heavy rain on Friday.

“Thunderstorm/lightning with moderate rain is likely in the entire city. This is likely for the next three hours,” IMD stated. Meanwhile, a spell of light rain is likely during the night. Meanwhile, Delhi’s Air Quality Index remained in the ‘satisfactory category’, with the average recorded at 72 at 11 AM on Friday.

Delhi Surpasses Its Monthly And Annual Rainfall Average

Delhi recorded 255.8 mm of rainfall, surpassing its monthly rainfall mark of 233.1 mm. In addition to this, the yearly rainfall total stands at 819.1 mm, crossing the average annual rainfall mark of 774.4 mm. This comes nearly four years after Delhi crossed its annual mark since 2021.

In the last 24 hours till 8:30 AM on August 15, Delhi received 80.4 mm of rainfall at Safdarjung, its base station, including a brief drizzle of 1 mm between 2:30 AM and 5:30 AM.

Delhi has recorded 800 mm of rainfall since May, crossing the average rainfall mark every month since then. May was the wettest month on record, with 186.4 mm of rainfall, which is over six times the normal average of 30.7 mm. In June, the national capital recorded 107.1 mm of rainfall, an excess of 45% over the long-period average (LPA) of 74.1 mm. In July, the city received 259.3 mm of rainfall, which was 24% more than the LPA of 209.7 mm, Hindustan Times reported.
