Bihar Polls: With just a few days remaining in the voting for the first phase of the Bihar Assembly election, Mahagathbandhan's chief ministerial candidate, Tejashwi Yadav, has hinted that multiple deputy chief ministers might be appointed if the alliance is elected to power. In a response to the questions regarding alleged neglect of Muslims in the opposition alliance, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader asserted that deputy CMs might be appointed from the Dalit and Muslim communities. Earlier at a joint press conference, the Mahagathbandhan announced Tejashwi Yadav and Mukesh Sahni as its chief minister and deputy CM faces, respectively.
While the Mahagathbandhan leaders stated it announced a leader from the Extreme Background Caste (EBC) for the deputy CM post, the opposition parties, including BJP and Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM, questioned Muslim's stature in the alliance. The rival parties asked why a Muslim leader was not announced for the deputy CM post despite the community being considered a loyal vote base for the RJD and having a larger population (18 per cent).
Tejashwi Yadav, in an interview with India Today, clarified that the opposition alliance respects all the communities, adding that multiple deputy chief ministers might be appointed if the Mahagathbandhan is elected to power. He further questioned the delay in the announcement of the chief ministerial candidate of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
“The BJP has issues with a representative from EBC being declared a Deputy CM face. Their IT cell has been trolling us for not naming a representative from a community they would otherwise call infiltrators,” Yadav was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.
While the NDA has asserted that the election is being fought under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, the ruling alliance has not made any official announcement, leading to criticism from the opposition parties. While the voting is set to be conducted in two phases on November 6 and 11, the result will be announced on November 14.
