Bihar has witnessed a significant rise in road accidents in 2024, with a 5 per cent increase in total incidents and a 3 per cent rise in fatalities compared to the previous year, according to a recent report by the Road Safety Committee. The data shows that road accidents surged in over two dozen districts, with the sharpest increases recorded in Rohtas, Madhepura, Jehanabad, Kishanganj, and Patna.

Patna topped the list with 1,272 accidents in 2024, up from 1,067 in 2023. Rohtas recorded 443 accidents, a steep rise from 353 last year. Similar trends were observed in Madhepura (223 from 179), Jehanabad (144 from 119), and Kishanganj (92 from 77).

The report also highlighted rising accident numbers in districts like Supaul, Saharsa, Saran, Siwan, Madhubani, Gaya, Arwal, Samastipur, Vaishali, Sitamarhi, Bettiah, Araria, Lakhisarai, Begusarai, and Nalanda.

Conversely, more than a dozen districts reported a decline in accidents. Bagaha saw a drop from 92 accidents in 2023 to 71 in 2024. Reductions were also noted in Sheikhpura, Buxar, Navgachhiya, Munger, Katihar, Bhojpur, Gopalganj, Nawada, Banka, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Shivhar, and Khagaria.

Notably, 40.3 per cent of total accidents occurred on national highways—a figure that has also increased this year. Following the review, officials have been instructed to implement road safety measures immediately. Departments have been directed to address deficiencies, ensure accurate accident reporting, and strictly enforce traffic rules, especially in high-risk districts.
