Tejashwi Yadav: In a generational shift in the party’s leadership, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has elevated former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, to the position of the party’s National Working President. 

The decision was announced on Sunday amid the growing concern over founder Lalu Prasad Yadav’s health and the party’s deteriorating performance.

Tejashwi Yadav was officially named RJD’s new working president at a national executive committee meeting of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Patna on Sunday.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal’s national executive meeting is currently underway at Hotel Maurya in Patna. Party supremo and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav is presiding over the session, joined by his wife and former CM Rabri Devi, senior leader Misa Bharti, and several other prominent figures of the party, reported PTI.

What Challenges Await Tejashwi Yadav As National President

RJD’s decision to change the party’s leadership and appoint Tejashwi Yadav as President follows its 2nd-worst performance in the Bihar assembly elections. The main opposition RJD’s score in the recently concluded Bihar Assembly polls 2025 was a disappointing sight as the party could secure only 25 seats, despite garnering the highest vote share.

This marks the party’s second-worst performance since inception, as it managed just 22 seats in 2010, when resurgent Nitish Kumar had teamed up with the BJP and scored a thumping win, ending the RJD's rule in Bihar. In 2005, when Nitish Kumar came to power with a thumping NDA win, RJD had secured 55 seats.

36-year-old RJD leader faces a challenge of reviving his party, which failed to convert its vote share into seats.

Tejashwi Yadav also faces a challenge at home amid a growing family rift. His sister Rohini Acharya, after her defeat in the recent election, left her father's house publicly blaming Tejashwi for the party's poor performance and accusing him of physically assaulting her.
