Severe cold is gripping the entire state. In most cities, the sun is not visible, and dewdrops are falling like a light drizzle. Currently, there is no expectation of relief from these conditions. According to meteorologist Sanjay Kumar, the impact of La Nina is being observed this time, which has led to an increase in the cold.
A disruption has occurred in the Polar Vortex forming over the North Pole. This has allowed extremely cold winds to enter, intensifying the winter. The influence of La Niña is expected to be visible until February.
Because of this, biting cold is likely to persist through February. La Niña will strengthen the Western Disturbances, bringing icy winds. Consequently, cold winds in the hilly regions of North India, accompanied by fog and mist, will persist for a prolonged period.
Colder Than The last 10 years
According to the World Meteorological Organization, this year's winter will be more severe compared to the last 10 years. The Meteorological Center Patna has also released a forecast for January, stating that the impact of the cold wave in the western part of the state will be higher than normal. With the minimum temperature likely to remain below normal, an increase in the cold is expected.
In January, the maximum temperature in Patna has hovered around 14.0°C to 20.0°C. This is significantly lower compared to previous years. Regarding Patna's minimum temperature, it has remained between 5°C and 10°C.

Temperature fluctuates Due To Wind Speed
Fluctuating temperatures are being observed in various districts of the state. According to the Meteorological Department, the primary reason for these temperature changes is the active Western Disturbance in the hilly regions of North India (Himalayas) and the icy cold westerly winds blowing from there. Specifically, the temperature drops rapidly due to dense fog and clear night skies, creating "Cold Day" and "Cold Wave" conditions.
According to meteorologists, low wind speeds cause cold air to stagnate in one place, intensifying the effect of the air. This contributes to a drop in temperature and an increase in the cold.
Active Jet Streams—groups of cold winds moving at speeds of 9 to 16 km per h in the upper atmosphere help transport this cold air to the plains. As a result, temperature fluctuations persist in many districts, with temperatures often dropping significantly below normal.
