Railway stations in Delhi witnessed a surge in passenger traffic on Tuesday as hundreds of natives from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand travelled to their hometowns to celebrate Chhath Puja festival. The Indian Railways announced 17 additional trains for Wednesday, including three for Patna and two each for Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur to accommodate travellers heading home for the traditional festival.
Indian Railways arranged services for Sitamarhi, Ayodhya, Bhagalpur, Banaras, Barauni, Ballia, Gaya, Mumbai and Mata Vaishno Devi. The majority of them primarily cater to those travelling to Bihar for the traditional festival of the state.

Chhath Puja Special Trains
- Anand Vihar Terminal-Bhagalpur Festival Special (04040/04039): Departing from Anand Vihar Terminal at 11:30 am on Wednesday, the train is expected to reach Bhagalpur at 11:40 am on Thursday. On the return trip, it will leave Bhagalpur at 2:30 pm on Thursday, arriving back at Anand Vihar Terminal by 2:30 pm on Friday. The train will stop at major stations such as Kanpur Central, Prayagraj and Patna, with all coaches air-conditioned.
- New Delhi-Saharsa Festival Special (04684/04683): This special departs from New Delhi at 9:30 pm on Wednesday, reaching Saharsa by 4 am on Friday. It will depart Saharsa at 8:20 am on Friday and return to New Delhi by 3:10 pm on Saturday. This train will halt at key stations, including Ghaziabad, Aligarh, Gorakhpur and Muzaffarpur. The train includes general, sleeper and AC coaches.
The special train services aim to ensure a smoother journey for passengers travelling for Chhath Puja. To manage the heavy influx at railway stations, passengers with unreserved seats are being directed to temporary waiting areas set up outside railway stations.
