In a tragic incident at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna, a third-year B Tech student allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday by jumping from the seventh floor of his hostel building. The deceased has been identified as Rahul Lavery, a resident of Hyderabad.
According to the police, the student pursuing a degree in Mathematics and Computing, took the major step as he had been suffering from significant stress, though the actual motive remains unclear.
"We received information that a student jumped off a roof inside the IIT campus. The team immediately reached the spot, and he was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead," news agency ANI quoted Danapur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) II, Pankaj Kumar Mishra.

"Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide, but further investigations are ongoing. The FSL team has collected blood samples from the incident site, and some WhatsApp chats have also been accessed," he added.
In the whatsapp message, Lavery stated, "I don’t deserve this… I’m a loser." The incident took a suspicious turn when one of his batchmates claimed that he was not suffering from depression.
“He wasn’t in depression. I don’t know why he took the step, but lately, there’s been too much academic pressure. In the morning, we went to take our exams, but he didn’t… By the time we broke the gate and went in, he had jumped,” Indian Express quoted Ritu Pran, Rahul’s batchmate.
