Angered by a recent crackdown on ragging, students at MIT (Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology) launched a violent attack on the coordinator of the Anti-Ragging Cell, Vipul Kumar, late on Wednesday night. The incident occurred when Kumar arrived at the hostel for a surprise inspection. Students attacked him with bricks and stones, verbally abused him, and even threatened to shoot him. Kumar somehow managed to escape and immediately informed the college administration.
The college principal, Dr MK Jha, has confirmed the attack on the faculty member. He stated that an inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the matter and that strict action will be in store for any student found guilty.
Why the Attack Happened?
Following a rise in ragging complaints at MIT, the college administration recently took strict measures, suspending about half a dozen students and approving action against 20 others. The Anti-Ragging Cell was formed to stop these incidents, and faculty members were given the responsibility of monitoring the hostels.
As part of these duties, Coordinator Vipul Kumar went to the hostel in his car around 10 PM on Wednesday. As soon as he arrived, a mob of about 20-25 students surrounded his vehicle and began verbally abusing him. They accused Kumar of identifying them in the ragging case, which led to their suspension. The students threatened to shoot him if any further action was taken, after which they started pelting his car with stones.

Following the incident, a series of meetings were held by various college committees throughout the day on Thursday.
Teachers To Conduct Inspections In Groups Of Five
After the attack on Vipul Kumar, the college's disciplinary committee met on Thursday and decided that faculty members will no longer conduct hostel inspections alone. They will now go in groups of five.
Notices Sent to a Dozen Students
Meanwhile, the MIT administration has sent notices to a dozen students in connection with a separate ragging incident involving a junior student last week. These students have been asked to appear before the anti-ragging committee with their parents to present their side of the story.
Some Recent Major Ragging Incidents
In a case where an M.Tech student was beaten by some B.Tech students, 14 students were found guilty. They were fined between Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000, expelled from the hostel, and it was decided to put a 'black mark' on their certificates.
In another case of assault and verbal abuse of a junior, 12 students were fined and suspended from the institute for six months.
