Five people were killed after a truck heading towards Gopalganj veered off the road and mowed them down in Bihar's Mothari. A few others were injured in the accident.
The accident is reported to have taken place at around 12:30 PM near Dipu turn, Kotwa police station area of the district. The truck hit eight people, of whom five were killed.
The victims were on bikes, e-rickshaws, and on foot, waiting on the roadside to cross when the truck hit them. The incident triggered panic and chaos in the area, pulling a massive crowd to the site.
The impact of the hit was so strong that five of them died on the spot, while others were left injured. Soon after getting the information, a police team rushed to the spot. The injured were taken to the hospital, where they were getting treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were taken into custody and sent to the district hospital for post-mortem. In protest, the angry mob blocked the Delhi-Kathmandu Highway in protest. The angry mob also entered into a heated argument with the police.
The police arrived at the accident spot immediately after getting the information and detained the truck driver. The driver is being questioned as part of an investigation to ascertain the cause.
According to preliminary investigation, the driver is suspected of having lost control of the truck, leading to the accident. The police are also examining footage from nearby CCTV cameras.
